Next Generation

Room: Bala

The trucking industry is changing rapidly and is facing a unique set of challenges  just as  a new  generation of trucking industry executives and managers prepare to receive the baton  and run the next leg of the race at their companies. OTA has created an exclusive  forum and agenda for the future leaders of the industry and the association. Alongside both mentors and peers, participants of the  Next Generation program can openly and casually discuss the issues that really matter to them.  The trucking industry is in need of fresh perspectives and there’s no better place for up-and-coming carrier professionals to share with like-minded peers their experiences as well as their thoughts and ideas about the future direction of the industry.

Through the Next Generation Program, the OTA has been developing its leaders and preparing them for their new and increased responsibilities. The OTA Spring Board Retreat is another opportunity to bring this group together and continue their learning.

Brenda Allen will lead the group through two, two-hour workshops. One on Leadership Branding and one on Strategic Alignment. A description and agenda follows for each:

Workshop 1: Branding Yourself

Description
You already have a brand… but is it the one you want? This workshop is focusing on helping you create the leadership brand you want to be known for. We will look at what a brand is, how it’s developed and what behaviours you can change to re-brand yourself as a leader.

AGENDA

  • What is a brand?
  • Why is your brand important to you and your business?
  • How would others describe you?
  • What actions or behaviours do you do that created your current brand?
  • What do you want to be known for?
  • What actions of behaviours do you need to change?
  • Look at the importance of consistency. In words/actions. In formal/informal situations.
  • What are 3 changes you will make following this session?
  • The need for ongoing feedback.

Workshop 2: Aligning for Success

Description
Nothing is more valuable than your time.

Are you spending your time wisely? Do you even know what “wisely” is? This workshop takes participants from the big picture through to their daily tasks and ensures that both are pulling your organization in the same direction. We will assess the clarity of your vision, identify your top 3 priorities, conduct a time audit and ensure your time is being spent effectively.

AGENDA

  • Map your time. Using their smartphones, participants will refer to their calendar and retro-map their time across five main buckets of activities (ie: customer sales meetings, internal meetings, administration).
  • What is your vision?
  • What are three top priorities that are needed to achieve your vision?
  • What are 3 actions under each priority that you must do to achieve them?
  • Now refer back to your time map. Put a checkmark next to each activity you performed that was advancing your priorities. Place an X next to those that aren’t.
  • Create commitments and detailed plans to discontinue 3 of the non-advancing activities (ie: who are you delegating to?).
